Driveways, patios, pool decks, porches and walkways take the worst of it here, and in Chino Hills most of them are on a slope. The tracts off Peyton and Pipeline, the hillside lots up toward Carbon Canyon, the terraced pads through Vellano and Payne Ranch. Almost all of it sits on ground that was cut and filled to make the pad.
That is what makes these slabs different. A cut-and-fill pad settles unevenly, and the clay soils through this basin swell when they take water and shrink back when they dry. The slab above moves with them, a little every season, which is why cracks here tend to reopen after they have been patched. The response is to treat the joint rather than hide it: chase the crack out, fill it with a material that can take some movement, and be straight about which cracks are stable and which are not.
A coating doesn't replace your concrete. It bonds into the slab you already own. On a sloped Chino Hills driveway there is a second thing it has to do, which is give you grip. We broadcast flake and can adjust the texture of the topcoat, so a wet driveway on a grade is still a surface you can walk down.
Concrete doesn't have to stay hidden under carpet. Inside, the slab is off the slope and out of the weather, and in these homes it is usually a good, modern pour. Once the carpet or tile is up, that slab becomes the finished floor: seamless, quick to sweep, with no grout lines or seams for dirt to settle into.
What makes that worth doing is how the floor is built. Every other option is a separate material laid over your slab. A coating isn't laid on the concrete. It is ground into it, and it cures as one continuous surface with nothing to lift, catch, or come apart at a seam.

Metallic epoxy and solid color are the two finishes we install inside, and we can coat a single room or carry the same floor through several. On a hillside lot we look at where water runs against the house before we quote anything at ground level.
The first floor that meets wet shoes and grit off the driveway. On a sloped lot the entry also catches whatever washes down toward it, so a surface that sheds rather than absorbs is worth having there.
Water resistant underfoot, so a tipped detergent bottle or a leaking washer is a wipe rather than a stain in the subfloor. Solid color is the usual pick, and it brightens a room that rarely has a window.
One seamless surface with nothing for crumbs, flour, or spills to sit in. Metallic reads as a design floor in an open kitchen, and solid color keeps it bright and quiet in a walk-in pantry.
High traffic, and where flooring transitions tend to look worst. A single coated run takes the joins out altogether, so there is nothing to lift, catch, or wear through down the middle.
Where metallic epoxy earns its keep. Pigment moves through the resin as it cures, so the pattern settles on site. In the split-level and terraced layouts common here it also lets you carry one continuous floor across levels that would otherwise need a transition strip at every step.
Converted and below-grade rooms are where moisture rises through the slab, and on a cut-and-fill hillside pad that also means water tracking through the ground on the uphill side. A moisture barrier primer goes down first wherever the readings call for it.
Three systems cover almost every home we coat. Flake goes outside, metallic goes inside, and solid color works in either when you want the floor to stay quiet. All three are epoxy and polyaspartic systems, all three go down over ground and prepared concrete, and all three carry the same 10-year warranty. One even color, no movement, no pattern. It suits laundry rooms, pantries, mud rooms, and hallways where you want the concrete bright and clean rather than decorative. Low maintenance: sweep and mop, no waxing and no resealing. It is also the most straightforward of the three to install.
Our main floor system, and the one that goes outside. Color flake is broadcast into the wet epoxy, then locked under a UV-stable polyaspartic topcoat. The texture gives grip when the surface is wet and hides dust and tire marks between cleans. Pick your blend from the color chart, or we will bring samples out with the estimate.

Our interior finish. Pigment moves through the resin as it cures, so the pattern is settled on site and no two floors finish alike. It suits living rooms, entryways, kitchens, and home gyms. Metallic colors are worth seeing in person before you choose, and we can bring them to the estimate.
A coating is only as good as the slab under it, and on ground that moves the honest work is in the cracks and joints.
We diamond grind every surface before anything goes down, which opens the concrete so the coating bonds into it rather than sitting on top. On a Chino Hills driveway we then go through the cracks properly: chased out, cut, and filled with a material that tolerates seasonal movement rather than a rigid filler that will simply split again. Control joints are cleaned and honoured rather than coated over, spalled edges are rebuilt, and where moisture is rising through the slab a moisture barrier primer goes down first.
Skip that work and the floor lets go at the bond line, and on a moving slab it telegraphs every crack straight back through the finish within a season. Putting it right costs more than doing it properly the first time.

Plan on more than one day for an outdoor floor. We grind and prep first, then coat, then let it cure. On a driveway with a lot of crack work the prep day runs long, and that is the day that decides whether the floor lasts.
Foot traffic is about 8 hours. Vehicles need longer, in as little as 48 hours on a driveway. Cure times stretch in cold weather, and we will give you the real schedule on the day.
Yes. Once the carpet, tile or vinyl is up, we coat the slab underneath. On a hillside lot we take moisture readings first, because ground water moves differently on a graded pad.
A coating will not stop ground moving, and anyone who tells you otherwise is selling something. What it can do is handle the movement properly. We chase and fill cracks with a material that flexes rather than a rigid patch, and we honour the control joints instead of bridging them. Where a crack is still actively opening we will say so before you spend anything, because on that slab the answer may be a repair first.
