Garage Floor Coating Questions, Answered

These are the questions homeowners ask us most, grouped into six topics: durability, materials, concrete condition, installation, pricing and warranty, and everyday care.

Our standard system is diamond-ground concrete, a 100% solids epoxy moisture barrier base coat, full decorative flake coverage and a polyaspartic topcoat, backed by a limited 10-year material and craftsmanship warranty.

Durability and Performance

Will my floor peel or chip?

Our coating system is designed for strong adhesion and long-term durability. We begin by mechanically diamond-grinding the concrete to create the proper surface profile, then address suitable cracks and damaged areas before applying our 100% solids epoxy moisture barrier base coat, decorative flake, and polyaspartic topcoat. Proper preparation is one of the most important factors in helping prevent coating failure. As with any coating system, the condition of the concrete and the environment can affect long-term performance.

Why do you diamond-grind the concrete instead of acid etching?

We use professional diamond-grinding equipment to mechanically prepare the concrete before coating. Our machine is propane powered with 3 planetary heads that rotate, giving the most thorough preparation possible. This removes surface contaminants and weak surface material while creating the appropriate profile for coating adhesion. We select grinding diamonds based on the hardness of the concrete. Unlike acid etching alone, mechanical grinding gives us greater control over the preparation process and helps us achieve a consistent surface for our coating system.

How long will my floor coating last?

Our coating system is designed to provide years of durable performance with proper installation and maintenance. Its lifespan depends on factors such as concrete condition, surface preparation, vehicle traffic, environmental exposure, and maintenance. We also provide a limited 10-year material and craftsmanship warranty, subject to the terms and exclusions in our written warranty.

Can I park a heavy truck or SUV on the floor?

Yes. Once the coating has fully cured according to the installation instructions, it is designed for normal residential garage use, including passenger vehicles, SUVs, and many trucks. We recommend avoiding excessive point loads, dragging sharp objects, and placing heavy equipment on small contact points without appropriate protection.

Will the coating hide imperfections in my concrete?

Our coating system can improve the appearance of many common concrete imperfections, and we repair suitable cracks and damaged areas before installation. However, decorative flake is not designed to conceal every crack, depression, uneven area, or structural defect. Existing imperfections and repairs may remain slightly visible depending on their size, depth, and the condition of the concrete.

Can damaged areas be repaired in the future?

In many cases, damaged areas can be repaired. The repair method depends on the type and extent of the damage, the condition of the underlying concrete, and whether the coating has been affected. We can evaluate the area and recommend an appropriate repair. Additional charges may apply depending on the work required.

Materials and Coating System

What is the difference between epoxy and polyaspartic?

Epoxy and polyaspartic coatings serve different purposes in a professionally installed floor system. Epoxy is commonly used as a base coat because it bonds to properly prepared concrete and provides a durable foundation including a moisture barrier. Polyaspartic is commonly used as a protective topcoat because it offers abrasion resistance, chemical resistance, and UV stability. At Evolve Epoxy, our system combines a 100% solids epoxy base coat or polyurea for added moisture protection, full decorative flake coverage, and a protective polyaspartic clear coat.

What makes Evolve Epoxy different from other floor-coating companies?

We are a small, family-owned and operated company, and customer service is a pillar of our business. We focus on professional preparation, quality materials, and a consistent installation process while giving our clients the best experience possible. Our process includes diamond grinding, appropriate concrete repairs, a 100% solids epoxy moisture barrier base coat, full decorative flake coverage, and a polyaspartic topcoat. We are licensed, bonded, and insured, and we employ full-time W-2 employees while carrying workers' compensation coverage. We also offer a limited 10-year material and craftsmanship warranty, subject to its written terms.

What colors and finishes can I choose from?

We offer a variety of decorative flake colors and styles to complement your home. Options include our standard flake finishes as well as upgraded marble and brindle styles. Your choice of color and finish can influence the overall look of the garage and may affect the final price. Ask our team about the available options and samples when requesting your estimate.

How many layers are included in your coating system?

Our standard system consists of three primary components: a 100% solids epoxy base coat, full decorative flake coverage, and a protective polyaspartic clear topcoat. Depending on the project and selected options, additional steps or layers may be appropriate. We can discuss optional upgrades, including an additional UV-stable clear coat, when preparing your quote.

Does the coating yellow in the sun?

Our polyaspartic topcoat is UV-stable and designed to resist yellowing and discoloration. However, prolonged direct sunlight can affect coatings and underlying materials over time, depending on the product and exposure conditions. Areas exposed to significant sunlight, such as garage entrances, may experience different levels of fading or discoloration than protected areas.

Can you coat my floor if it has old epoxy or paint?

Yes. Existing coatings, including loose, peeling, or incompatible coatings, will need to be removed before installation. We use specialized diamond tooling for this important step, taking the floor back to bare concrete. Because removal can require additional labor and preparation, it may affect the final estimate. We assess the existing surface before recommending the appropriate approach.

Concrete Condition and Moisture

Can you repair cracks, pits, and damaged concrete?

Yes, we can repair many common surface cracks, pits, and areas of damaged concrete as part of the preparation process. The repair method depends on the type and severity of the damage. Structural cracks, ongoing movement, and significant concrete deterioration may require additional evaluation or repairs beyond standard surface preparation. We will assess the concrete and discuss any concerns that could affect the finished floor.

Can you coat concrete with moisture problems?

Moisture conditions should be evaluated before installing a coating system. Our 100% solids epoxy base coat is part of our moisture-management approach, but it is not a universal solution for every moisture condition. Excessive moisture vapor transmission, hydrostatic pressure, or active water intrusion can affect coating performance. Where concerns exist, the concrete may require moisture testing and further evaluation to determine whether our system is suitable. Keep in mind that a moisture test is only a snapshot in time, affected by the season, the time of day, and the location being tested. Moisture fluctuates throughout the year, so a test is only a sample. We can also use a higher moisture-mitigating product, such as polyurea or a higher-psi epoxy moisture barrier.

What happens if my garage floor has oil stains?

Oil and other contaminants must be properly addressed before a coating is applied. We evaluate the affected areas during preparation and use appropriate cleaning and mechanical preparation methods where possible. Deeply penetrated oil or other contamination can sometimes interfere with adhesion, so certain areas may require additional treatment or may not be suitable for coating without further remediation.

Can you coat my driveway, patio, or pool deck?

Our coating system is selected for the intended application and the condition of the concrete. Not every coating designed for an enclosed garage is suitable for an outdoor driveway, patio, or pool deck. Outdoor surfaces have different exposure, weather, moisture, and traction requirements. Contact us with details about your project so we can determine whether we offer an appropriate system for your application.

Can you coat the stem walls around my garage?

Yes, stem wall curbing can be included in your project. The height and length of the stem walls can affect the amount of material and labor required, so we account for these details when preparing your estimate. Let us know if you would like the vertical perimeter surfaces coated along with the garage floor.

Installation and Preparation

Do you move appliances, refrigerators, or heavy storage?

We ask that all personal belongings and movable items be removed from the garage before our arrival. This includes storage bins, tools, shelving contents, vehicles, and other items covering the floor. We do not assume responsibility for clearing a garage full of belongings, so please contact us in advance if you have an unusually heavy or difficult-to-move item that requires special arrangements.

What happens if it rains or the weather changes?

Weather and environmental conditions can affect concrete preparation, coating application, and curing, particularly when moisture or temperature conditions fall outside the product manufacturer's requirements. We monitor conditions and may need to adjust or reschedule an installation if the environment is unsuitable. Our scheduling is weather-dependent, and we will communicate with you if changes are necessary.

Why do I need to clear the entire garage before installation?

The garage floor must be completely clear when our crew arrives. This allows us to prepare and coat the entire surface efficiently, maintain a consistent installation process, and avoid damage to personal belongings. Having the garage ready also helps us stay on schedule and comply with our work and insurance requirements. If you have questions about a specific item, please discuss it with us before installation day.

How long does installation take?

Most average two- to four-car residential garages can be installed in approximately one day. The exact time depends on the size and condition of the concrete, repairs required, existing coatings, and the selected system. Although installation is typically completed in one day, the coating still requires additional time to cure before the garage can be used.

Do I need to be home during installation?

No, you generally do not need to be home during installation. Our crew is self-sufficient and needs access to the garage and the agreed-upon work area. You can keep your home locked and secure while we complete the work. We will coordinate access arrangements with you before your scheduled installation.

When will your crew arrive?

Our typical arrival window is between 7:00 a.m. and 8:00 a.m., depending on travel distance and traffic conditions. We will send you a text message when our crew is on the way to your property. If there are any unexpected delays, we will communicate with you as appropriate.

When can I walk on the floor or park my car?

Our standard guidance is to allow 48 hours after completion before walking on the floor and 72 hours before placing vehicles, heavy objects, or belongings back on it. Actual cure times can vary with the specific products used and site conditions. We will confirm the appropriate re-entry and use instructions for your installation. Following these instructions helps protect the coating while it cures.

How far in advance do you book?

We typically schedule installations one to two weeks in advance on a first-come, first-served basis. Availability can vary with seasonal demand, weather, and existing project schedules. Contact us for our current availability and to reserve your preferred installation date.

Pricing, Warranty, and Customer Care

How much does a garage floor coating cost?

Pricing depends on the total square footage, concrete condition, repairs required, existing coatings that may need removal, stem wall curbing height, and the selected decorative flake finish.

As a general guide, average pricing is:

  • Two-car garage: $1,850–$2,600
  • Three-car garage: $2,850–$3,600

Standard flake finishes and upgraded marble or brindle styles may have different pricing. Your final price will be confirmed in a written quote after we evaluate your project and discuss your preferences.

What type of warranty do you offer?

We offer a limited 10-year material and craftsmanship warranty, subject to the terms and exclusions in our formal written warranty. Certain issues caused by user neglect or environmental conditions are excluded, although repair options may be available. We encourage every customer to review the warranty included with their quote so they understand the coverage before moving forward.

Do you provide a written quote before installation?

Yes. We provide a formal written quote outlining the proposed project and applicable pricing before installation. This allows you to review the scope of work, selected finish, relevant options, and warranty information before making a decision. If additional work is identified, we will discuss it with you rather than assume it is included in the original price.

How do I schedule an estimate?

Getting started is easy. Contact Evolve Epoxy with your project details, including your garage size, location, concrete condition, and preferred finish. We can discuss your needs, determine the appropriate next steps, and provide a quote based on your project. Contact our team to discuss current availability and schedule your estimate. We do our best to give clients an efficient and seamless experience.

Why should I choose a professional coating instead of a DIY kit?

A professional coating installation involves more than applying a product to concrete. Proper surface preparation, concrete assessment, repairs, material selection, and application techniques all contribute to the finished result. Our process uses professional diamond grinding, a 100% solids epoxy base coat, full decorative flake coverage, and a protective polyaspartic topcoat. We also provide a written limited 10-year material and craftsmanship warranty, subject to its terms. These details help distinguish our system from many basic DIY solutions.

What happens if something goes wrong with my floor?

If you notice a concern with your coating, contact Evolve Epoxy and explain the issue. We can review the affected area, determine whether it may fall under the terms of your warranty, and discuss appropriate next steps. Coverage depends on the written warranty, the cause of the issue, and the condition of the coating and underlying concrete. When a repair is not covered, we can discuss available repair options and any associated costs.

Cleaning, Safety, and Everyday Use

How do I clean my coated garage floor?

Routine cleaning is simple. Sweep or dust-mop the floor to remove dirt and debris, then clean it with mild soap and water as needed. A diluted Simple Green solution at a 1:1 ratio or a specially formulated ERC cleaner may also be suitable when used according to its product instructions. Avoid abrasive tools and harsh chemicals unless they are confirmed compatible with your coating. Wipe up spills promptly to help maintain the finish.

Is the floor slippery?

Our decorative flake system provides surface texture, and the polyaspartic topcoat offers a durable, easy-to-clean finish. Additional traction-enhancing material may be available upon request. However, any smooth or coated surface can become slippery when wet, oily, or contaminated. We recommend exercising caution in wet conditions and discussing additional traction options if slip resistance is a particular concern.

Is the floor safe for children and pets?

Once fully cured according to the product manufacturer's instructions, our garage floor coating is designed for normal residential use and routine cleaning. During installation and curing, children and pets should be kept away from the work area, and appropriate ventilation should be maintained. We recommend following the specific product safety and re-entry instructions provided for your project.

Does the floor stain from oil, chemicals, or other spills?

Our polyaspartic topcoat is designed to provide resistance to many common garage contaminants, but no coating is completely stain-proof or resistant to every chemical. Clean up oil, automotive fluids, cleaners, and other spills promptly using an appropriate cleaning method. Prolonged exposure to certain chemicals or harsh substances may discolor or damage the finish.

Do your materials have a strong odor?

We use high-solids, low-odor coating materials that are California VOC compliant. Our materials have low to zero additives, so the coating cures thicker and more durable instead of evaporating and leaving a thinner film. Some chemical odor may be noticeable during application and curing. The intensity and duration depend on the products used, ventilation, temperature, and site conditions. Keep people and pets away from the work area during installation and follow the crew's instructions for safe re-entry and ventilation.

What materials do you use?

We use coating materials manufactured in the United States that meet applicable California VOC requirements. Our system includes a 100% solids epoxy base coat or polyurea base coat, decorative flakes, and a UV-stable polyaspartic clear topcoat. We prioritize high-solids, low-odor materials selected for the intended application, with an emphasis on durability, appearance, and ease of maintenance. Technical data sheets are available for transparency upon request.
